How to Save Text Messages on iPhone So They're Never Lost

To save text messages on iPhone, first make sure the phone isn’t deleting them: go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages and choose Forever. Then protect them against a lost or broken phone with Messages in iCloud or an iPhone backup. For the conversations that really matter, also keep a readable copy, such as a PDF, outside the Messages app.

These are four different kinds of protection, and none of them covers everything on its own.

Step 1: Stop automatic deletion with Keep Messages

Your iPhone can delete old conversations by itself. Apple’s guide says that if you choose any option other than Forever, “your conversations (including all attachments) are automatically removed after the specified time period elapses” (Apple: Delete messages and attachments).

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Messages.
  2. Scroll down to Message History and tap Keep Messages.
  3. Choose Forever.

If old texts have been vanishing, this setting is the most likely reason. Changing it doesn’t bring back what’s already gone.

Step 2: Turn on Messages in iCloud (and know what it isn’t)

Messages in iCloud keeps your whole message history in iCloud and in sync on every device signed in to the same Apple Account, including SMS, MMS, RCS and iMessage (Apple: Set up Messages in iCloud).

  1. Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud.
  2. Tap Messages (if you don’t see it, tap See All first).
  3. Turn on Use on this iPhone.

It protects you if the phone is lost, because your history stays in iCloud and on your other devices signed in to that account. It does not protect you from deleting something. Apple says that when you delete a message on your iPhone, it’s also deleted from your other devices that use Messages in iCloud. It also uses iCloud storage; every account includes 5 GB free (Apple: iCloud storage).

Step 3: Back up your iPhone

A backup is a snapshot of the phone you can restore later.

  • iCloud Backup: Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup, turn on Back Up This iPhone, and tap Back Up Now for an immediate backup. It then runs daily when the iPhone is charging, locked and on Wi-Fi (Apple: Back up iPhone).
  • On a Mac: connect with a cable, select the iPhone in the Finder sidebar, click General, choose to back up all data to this Mac, and click Back Up Now. On Windows, use iTunes: the iPhone button > Summary > Back Up Now (same Apple page).

One detail trips people up: messages are part of iCloud Backup only when Messages in iCloud is off. With it on, they’re stored in iCloud through sync instead (Apple: What iCloud backs up).

And a backup isn’t something you can browse. To get messages out of it, you restore the whole backup to an iPhone, which means erasing that phone first (Apple: Restore from a backup).

Step 4: Keep a readable copy of the conversations that matter

A file copy is the only one of these you can open anywhere, read on a computer, print, or hand to someone. It’s worth making for a conversation you can’t afford to lose: texts from a family member, an agreement with a landlord, a thread you may need to show later.

Free options are screenshots, or a PDF from Messages on a Mac (File > Print, then the PDF menu; Apple, macOS Sequoia guide).

On the iPhone, Exportly turns one conversation into a PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, Text or HTML file you can save to Files. On iOS 26 or later, the Exportly Shortcut brings in a whole conversation with its photos; Record & scroll works from a screen recording on any iOS version, for chats in English or Turkish. Bringing a chat in and previewing it costs nothing; saving the file requires Exportly Pro.

To be clear about what this is: a file copy is a record to read, not a backup. Exportly can’t put messages back into the Messages app, restore a phone, or recover messages that were already deleted.

What each method protects against

Method Lost or broken phone You delete a chat by mistake Readable without an iPhone
Keep Messages: Forever No No No
Messages in iCloud Yes No, deletions sync No
iPhone backup Yes, by restoring Only if the backup predates the deletion No
A file copy (PDF, Word…) Yes, if stored elsewhere Yes Yes

If you already deleted a text

Deleted messages stay in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. In Messages, tap the Filter button, tap Recently Deleted, select the conversations and tap Recover > Recover Messages (Apple: Recover deleted messages). After that, the only way back is restoring a backup made before you deleted it. Apple also notes that messages removed with Undo Send are permanently deleted.

Questions people ask

Why are my old text messages disappearing?

Most likely Keep Messages is set to something other than Forever, so your iPhone removes conversations after that period.

Are my text messages in my iCloud backup?

Only if Messages in iCloud is turned off. When it’s on, your messages are kept in iCloud through sync rather than in the backup.

Does Messages in iCloud keep a copy if I delete a text on my iPhone?

No. A deletion on one device is applied to all your devices that use Messages in iCloud.

What’s the safest way to keep one important conversation?

Keep it on your phone with Forever and a backup, and also save a copy as a file stored somewhere else, such as a PDF.
