How to Save Your Messages Before Deleting an Account
To save your messages before deleting an account, run the app’s official data download or chat export, wait until the file is actually on your device, and only then delete. The order matters: several services cancel or block the download once deletion starts, and deleted messages can’t be restored. Most official downloads are archives (JSON or HTML), so also keep a readable copy of any single conversation you’ll need to show someone.
The safe order of steps
Follow this sequence for any app.
- Request the official download while your account is fully active.
- Wait for it and download the file. A request isn’t a copy. Some links expire after a few days.
- Open the file and check that the messages you care about are in it.
- Make a readable copy of any conversation you’ll need to read, print or send.
- Store the files outside the app, for example in Files or on a computer.
- Then delete the account.
Why you can’t do it after deleting
Services are clear that deletion ends access, and some stop a download that’s already in progress:
- Discord cancels your data request if you disable or delete your account before the download link arrives (Discord Support: Requesting a copy of your data).
- Facebook and Messenger can’t export from a profile that’s deactivated or scheduled for deletion; you’d have to cancel the deletion first (Facebook Help: Export your information).
- WhatsApp says deleting your account deletes your message history backup, and it can’t restore chats, media or backups from deleted accounts (WhatsApp Help: How to delete your account).
- Telegram says deleting your account permanently removes all your messages and contacts, and it can’t be undone (Telegram FAQ).
- Viber says deactivating permanently removes your chat history and purchases (Viber Help: Rakuten Viber settings).
One thing deletion doesn’t do: WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook all note that people you messaged keep their own copy of what you sent.
App by app: what the official download gives you
Waiting times and formats differ a lot. Start the slow ones first.
| App | Where to start | Wait | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Each chat > Export chat | Done on your phone, chat by chat | A ZIP per chat, with or without media | |
| Accounts Center > Export your information | Up to 30 days | Download available for 4 days once ready | |
| Facebook / Messenger | Accounts Center > Export your information | Not stated | HTML or JSON, available for 4 days once ready |
| X | Your X data > Request data | A few days | ZIP of HTML and JSON, includes DMs |
| Snapchat | My Data | Aims for 7 days | ZIP, open index.html |
| Discord | Data & Privacy > Request Data | Up to 30 days | JSON plus your uploaded files |
| Download your data | Up to 48 hours for messages | Link valid for 72 hours | |
| Telegram | Telegram Desktop > Export Telegram data | Done on your computer | JSON or HTML, with media |

WhatsApp: the account report doesn’t include your chats
WhatsApp’s Request Account Info report doesn’t include your messages (WhatsApp Help). To keep chats, export each one:
- Open the chat and tap the contact’s or group’s name.
- Tap Export chat.
- Choose With all media, With selected media… or Without media.
- Pick where to send it, such as Save to Files.
The chat is saved as a ZIP file. View once messages aren’t exported, and the file can’t be imported back into WhatsApp (WhatsApp Help: How to export your chat history).
Snapchat: saved chats depend on friendship
Snapchat’s download includes saved chat history, but Snapchat notes that if you and another Snapchatter are no longer friends, saved messages from that chat may no longer be stored. Download before you remove anyone.
Telegram: export from a computer
Telegram’s documented export is in Telegram Desktop (Settings > Export Telegram data, or Export chat history from a single chat’s menu). Its FAQ says Telegram Lite on macOS can export too. The mobile apps have no documented export.
For app-specific detail, see how to download your Instagram messages and how to download your Twitter (X) DMs.
Keep a readable copy of the chats that matter
An archive of JSON files is a complete record, but it isn’t something you can hand to a landlord or print for a family member. For those conversations, make a document as well. Exportly does this on your iPhone, by a different route per app:
- WhatsApp: share the Export chat ZIP to Exportly. Photos come along if you exported with media. This route reads the file, so any language works.
- Messages: use the Exportly Shortcut, which needs iOS 26 or later, and choose a range from Last 3 months to Everything (slowest).
- Any other app: Record & scroll or From screenshots while the conversation is still on your screen. These read English and Turkish text only and bring in text, not photos.
Then export as PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, Text or HTML and save it to Files. Importing and previewing are free; exporting, sharing and printing need Exportly Pro, a weekly or yearly subscription with the price shown in the app before you buy. Your chats are processed on your iPhone and never uploaded.
Exportly doesn’t back up accounts or recover deleted messages, so it can only help while the chat still exists. See the WhatsApp to PDF guide and the guide to exporting text messages from iPhone for those two routes, and the Telegram guide for apps without a built-in export.
Questions people ask
Will I lose my messages if I delete my account?
Yes, from your side. WhatsApp and Telegram both say deleted accounts can’t be restored. The people you messaged usually keep their copies.
Can I still download my data after deleting?
Usually not. Discord cancels pending requests and Facebook won’t export a profile scheduled for deletion. Tinder is an exception: it offers a privacy request form for deleted accounts.
How long do data downloads take?
From a few days to a month. WhatsApp’s account report is typically ready in about three days, X says a few days, Snapchat aims for 7 days, and Instagram and Discord can take up to 30 days. Start early.
