How to Export a GroupMe Chat and Download Messages
To download your GroupMe messages, sign in to GroupMe on the web, click your avatar and choose Export my data. You pick which data sets and which group chats or direct messages to include, then download the file when it’s ready. Export works only on the web, and the download contains JSON files that need a viewer to read.
How to export GroupMe data on the web
You can’t do this in the GroupMe app on your phone. Use a browser on a computer.
- Sign in to GroupMe on the web.
- Click your avatar (your profile picture).
- Select Export my data.
- Click Create export. If an earlier export exists, GroupMe asks whether to replace it; click Yes.
- Select the data sets you want, then Next.
- Select the conversations and direct messages to include, then Export.
- A message says the export is being generated. Click Back to return to the Export My Data screen.
- When the export appears under Manage Export, click Download.

Two rules that catch people out
Only one export at a time. GroupMe keeps one active export. Creating a new one replaces the previous one, so download the first file before you start a second.
Choose the chats on purpose. Step 6 lets you pick conversations. If you need a specific group, such as a team, a club or a class, make sure it’s ticked. Include direct messages too if they matter.
If you use GroupMe with a Microsoft account, Microsoft’s page notes that your Microsoft data is managed separately on the Microsoft privacy dashboard.
How to read the GroupMe export
Microsoft says the export includes JSON files, “which you will need an external viewer to read”. JSON is structured data. It holds the messages, but it isn’t laid out like a conversation, and opening it in a text editor shows code-like text.
That makes the export good for keeping a complete copy of your groups. It’s less good when a coach, landlord or club treasurer asks you to send “the group chat from March”. For that, you want a readable file of one conversation.
Save one GroupMe chat as a PDF on your iPhone
From your iPhone, the free route is screenshots of the group chat. In a busy group that means a lot of images. Exportly can turn a screen recording of the chat into a single document instead. GroupMe isn’t a named app in Exportly, so use Other.
- In Exportly, add a chat, choose Other, then Record & scroll.
- Tap Start Screen Recording and confirm Start Broadcast.
- Open GroupMe, go to the group, start at the oldest message you need and scroll down slowly.
- Come back to Exportly. Type a name in the optional Contact name field under Chat with, such as the group’s name; it becomes the chat’s title. Then check the preview.
- On the export sheet, choose All or a Date range to keep only the weeks you need, then pick a format.
Which format suits a group chat:
- PDF with plain text puts the date and time above every message, so a long thread stays easy to follow on paper.
- Excel gives one row per message with Date, Time, Sender, Message and Attachment columns, handy for filtering by date or searching for a word.
The limits: Exportly reads English and Turkish text only, brings in text but not photos, and reads only what was on screen. Your own messages are labelled “You” and the rest of the chat gets the name you typed, so a screen import doesn’t tell group members apart by name. Check the preview for misread words. Importing and previewing are free; exporting, sharing and printing need Exportly Pro (weekly or yearly, with the price shown in the app before you buy). The chat is processed on your iPhone and never uploaded. Exportly doesn’t open GroupMe’s JSON export.
Group texts in Messages and group chats in WhatsApp have their own routes; see how to save a group text on iPhone and how to export a WhatsApp group chat. For work groups in Slack, read how to export a Slack conversation. The Telegram guide compares options for apps without a built-in export.
Questions people ask

Can I export only one group?
Yes. When you create the export, you select which conversations and direct messages to include.
Why can’t I start a second export?
