How to Export WeChat Chat History

You can’t export WeChat chat history as a file. Its own help center says chat history “cannot be exported as it is not stored on WeChat servers”, and its personal-data export covers Moments, Favorites and account information only (WeChat Help Center). To keep your chats, WeChat offers three things instead: a backup to WeChat for Windows or Mac, migration to another phone, and saving selected messages to Favorites. None of them produces a readable file such as a PDF.

Why WeChat can’t export your chats

WeChat keeps your messages on your phone, not on its servers. Chats stay in the app “as long as the app is not removed and the phone has sufficient storage space” (WeChat Help Center). Because “WeChat does not store chat data on its servers”, there’s no cloud copy to download either (WeChat Help Center).

So if your phone is lost or WeChat is deleted without a backup, the chats go with it. That makes a backup the first thing to set up.

Back up WeChat chat history to a computer

This is WeChat’s official way to keep a copy outside your phone.

  1. Install WeChat for Windows or Mac from wechat.com and log in. Put the phone and the computer on the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. In WeChat on the computer, click the icon in the lower-left corner, then Migrate and Backup > Backup and Restore.
  3. On the phone, select the chat history to back up and confirm.
  4. Keep the phone connected and WeChat open until the backup finishes.

Move WeChat chats to a new phone

To migrate rather than back up, start on the old phone. In one of WeChat’s articles the path is Me > Settings > General > Chat History Migration & Backup > Migration, then migrate to another phone or tablet and select the chats (WeChat Help Center). Another WeChat article gives it as Me > Settings > Chat > Backup & Migrate Chats > Migrate Chats to Another Device (WeChat Help Center). WeChat notes the path “may vary depending on the device”, so look for whichever version your app shows. Both phones must be on the same network.

Save important messages to Favorites

For a few key messages, Favorites is quicker than a full backup.

  1. Long-press a message and tap Select.
  2. Select the messages you want, up to 100 at a time.
  3. Tap the Favorites icon.

What “View and Export Personal Data” includes

The data export is real, but it doesn’t contain chats. It covers “Personal Moments data, Favorites data, Personal account information”.

  1. Go to Me > Settings > Privacy > My Information & Authorizations > View and Export Personal Data.
  2. Verify your email and select the data.
  3. Wait for the download link, which WeChat sends “within three business days”.
  4. Open the link in a browser on a PC or Mac, verify by scanning a QR code with WeChat, then unzip the file with the password provided.

Can you get a readable copy of a WeChat chat?

Only by capturing the screen: screenshots for a few messages, or a screen recording while you scroll for more. WeChat’s help center says nothing about notifying the other person when you do.

Exportly, an iPhone app, can turn a screen recording or screenshots into a PDF, Word or Excel file, but with a hard limit for WeChat users: it reads English and Turkish text only. WeChat chats written in Chinese, or any other language, can’t be read by Exportly for now. If your conversation is in English, the route is: add a chat in Exportly, choose WeChat, then Record & scroll or From screenshots, and export. Importing and previewing are free; exporting needs Exportly Pro (price shown in the app before you buy). The chat is processed on your iPhone and never uploaded, and Exportly doesn’t back up, restore or migrate WeChat.

If you’re switching apps or closing your account, see how to save your messages before deleting an account. LINE, by contrast, does have a text export: see how to export LINE chat history. Other apps are compared in how to export a Telegram chat on iPhone.
